Mortal Kombat Fans Are Up in Arms About Johnny Cage’s Movie Exclusion

The official trailer bodes good things for the Mortal Kombat film, but where's Johnny Cage?

Mortal Kombat

Warner Bros. released the official trailer for Mortal Kombat earlier today (its Russian trailer was leaked online before that), and while the fans were excited because the trailer promises a decent flick, there was a noticeable lack of Johnny Cage in the trailer. This seems to indicate that Cage won’t be part of the reboot. We saw major characters like Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Sonya Blade and Liu Kang, but no Cage.

Cage was one of the original fighters in the very first Mortal Kombat arcade game, and the character was based on Jean-Claude Van Damme. He was also a major character in the 1995 film, so his absence is certainly felt.

Why No Johnny Cage?

A simple reason that Cage isn’t appearing in this could be due to the addition of a new character, Cole King (played by Lewis Tan). Tan is well-versed in Martial Arts, and has taken on prominent roles in shows like Wu Assassins and Into the Badlands. He seems to be the protagonist of the film, and as a newcomer, this allows the audience to navigate the world with him, providing context for those who aren’t familiar with the space of Mortal Kombat.

This sort of fills the role that Cage would have played, and thus filmmakers might have decided that the character wasn’t needed in this one. Of course, this is not to say that he might not show up in a smaller capacity in the film, and this was just not revealed in the trailer.

I guess we will only find out when the film is released April 16, 2021.
