Joaquin Phoenix Is Mesmerizing In Final Trailer For Joker

"Send in the clowns."

Warner Bros. just released the final trailer for Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix, and I am happy to say that for once we have a DC movie that doesn’t have a trailer loaded with spoilers (remember Batman v Superman?). Phoenix delivers such a mesmerizing and compelling portrayal of the iconic character that you will want to absorb every minute – his walk, his laugh, his facial expressions – it is truly a masterclass in acting. It is a smart move from Warner Bros. to release the final trailer now, considering the movie will hit theatres October, 4th 2019, which is slightly more than a month away.

Directed by Todd Philips, Joker is an exploration of Arthur Fleck, a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night, but finds the joke always seems to be on him. There is this absolutely brutal moment in the trailer, where Arthur says “When I was a little boy and told people I was going to be a comedian, everyone laughed at me. Well no one’s laughing now”, and De Niro’s character completely destroys him with his response of “You could say that again, pal!”

It is very clear the message the movie is going for. The Joker becomes cruel and villainous because this is what he receives from society; he is a reflection of the apathy and chaos that we have surrounded ourselves in. There is much sympathy to be had for Arthur, because he doesn’t seem like a bad guy, but sometimes one pivotal moment can send one’s life moving in a different direction. Needless to say, this a must-see movie of 2019, and hopefully it delivers on all it has promised.
