Since it’s a series that has spanned literal decades, Dragon Ball has a ton of lore packed into it. With three shows, several movies, and dozens of games under the franchise’s belt, it can be a little hard to keep track of the plot’s ins and outs. It’s not even over yet, as a second season of Dragon Ball Super (DBS) is on the horizon.
One of the concepts you might get confused about in the Dragon Ball multiverse is the concept of gods. Is Goku a god? Is the pure-hearted Saiyan somehow akin to the universe’s deities?
Technically speaking, yes, Goku is a god in Dragon Ball. The Super Saiyan God form is not just a fancy name to make the form sound powerful. Goku, and Vegeta, are able to use God Ki. A form of Ki that regular mortals can’t even sense, something belonging to only the gods of the Dragon Ball multiverse.
What Are The Classifications Of Gods In Dragon Ball?
Here are the currently known types of gods present in Dragon Ball lore:
- Protectors/Guardians (example: Kami): They are beings dedicated to protecting a single planet. It is unclear, however, if every planet with sentient life in the universe has one.
- Kais (example: King Kai): They are a stage higher than Guardians, Kais are meant to protect entire sections of the universe. There are 4 Kais that are each meant to protect their quadrant of the Universe, a Grand Kai that’s meant to oversee all of them, and a Supreme Kai that’s above them all and acts as the protector of their respective universe.
- Gods of Destruction (example: Beerus): They are meant to be the counterparts of the Supreme Kais. They have the role of destroying worlds and eliminating races that they deem unworthy and who might hinder their universe’s development.
- Angels (example: Whis): Despite their name, Angels in the Dragon Ball lore possess god ki and are therefore deities themselves. They have the role of guiding, teaching, and serving the Gods of Destruction and Zeno
- Omni-King/Zeno: The single-most powerful being in the multiverse. Overseeing it, and casually wipes out entire universes as he sees fit.
Can Other Races Turn Into Gods?
The Super Saiyan God transformation is a special case in that it doesn’t really have an innate role, unlike the other deities. There just has to be six good-hearted Saiyans to start a ritual to turn one of them into a Super Saiyan God. Actually, even that’s not set in stone as Vegeta achieved the form through pure training alone.
It’s currently unknown if any other race has a ritual like this. There are ways for other races to turn into gods though. They can become Protectors, Namekians tend to take on this role but it is not restricted to their race.
If strong enough, they can even turn into Gods of Destruction like how Toppo did in the Tournament of Power. It’s also been theorized a lot that Goku and Vegeta themselves will take the place of a God of Destruction, Supreme Kai, or Angel sometime in the future.
