The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Writer Peter Craig Will Pen Logan’s Run Remake

Deadline just confirmed that Warner Bros. hired Peter Craig to write the screenplay for their upcoming Logan’s Run remake, which will be directed by X-Men: Dark Phoenix’s Simon Kinberg.

Craig’s previous writing credits include Ben Affleck’s The Town, the Hunger Games: Mockingjay duology, and the recently released 12 Strong. He also scripted Lionsgate’s upcoming Robin Hood, which stars Taron Egerton as the Prince of Thieves.

Based on the novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, Logan’s Run takes place in a seemingly idyllic utopian future with one major drawback: in order to control the size of the population and the distribution of resources, people are not allowed to live past the age of thirty. In the 1976 film version, Michael York starred as Logan, who rebels against the system by trying to escape rather than giving up his life when he reaches his third decade. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards, and is certainly an interesting slice of pre-Star Wars science fiction.

Interestingly, the Deadline article mentions that Warner Bros. are hoping the remake will replicate the success of last year’s Blade Runner 2049 due to its somewhat similar premise. Which is an odd thing to say, since Blade Runner 2049 was a major financial failure and ended up losing around $80 million, despite being adored by critics.

Either way, a Logan’s Run remake has been floated around for years, so now that a director and writer are finally attached, it shouldn’t be too long before things finally start taking shape. In an age where overpopulation is one of the most serious issues we face, most of us could probably do with a relevant science fiction movie.
