How To: Make Infused Water

Infused Water

I’m not sure if people are aware of the infused water craze on the internet. It’s crazy. Loco!

What is infused water, you ask? Infuse means to be ‘steep, or soak’ and Water.. well.. is water! And all you do is allow fruit to sit in water. It’s been around for a long time and the benefits of drinking it are endless. It’s inexpensive, it’s easy, and most of all it’s very very tasty, and a good treat for people who don’t necessarily like drinking plain old still water!

So enough talking; lets get down to the business!

Combinations include:
Orange, lemon, lime
Cucumber, apple, mint
Strawberry, Raspberry, Mint
Orange and Apple
Orange and Grapefruit
Lemon and mint
Cucumber and apple
…and many more!

There are so many benefits of drinking infused water; particular fruits like lemon, which are good for digestion and hydration; you will notice that you will have clearer skin, more energy and generally feel good!

What you will need is:
Mason Jars (Or any Jars a decent size to fit fruit in)
Voss Bottles
Infused water bottles/decent sized travel mug(for the on the goers)
Water
Fruit.

Once you have picked the fruit combination you want to make, all you need to do is cut up the fruit into slices, or depending on your jar, container or Voss bottle and cut them into small squares; (but for fruits like blueberries, or raspberries all you need to do is wash them and put them in the jar) stick them in, add water and put it in the fridge. Now, I personally use bottled water, or I boil my water beforehand and refrigerate it and then pour it into my jar or bottle.

The most ideal type of water to use is either room temperature or cold water – boiling hot water will take away all of the necessary vitamins from the fruit, and also break down the fruit and make your water look like a mushy mess.
Now I know the next question you want to ask is ‘Won’t the fruit mould in the water?’ No! There are some fruits, like apples, that may turn a little brown when in the water, but if you’ve made water with apples, it’s best to drink it within 2-3 days. But obviously, if you notice your water looking or smelling funny, just don’t drink it!

Fruits like oranges, strawberries, lemons, limes and cucumbers can last a little longer, as long as you keep them refrigerated. The life span of an infused water jar or bottle I would say, maximum 4 days, and you CAN eat the fruit, but it just won’t be as flavourful due to all of the juices and vitamins infused in the water!

You can keep the water in the fridge from 2-3 hours, or for 24 hours depending on how strong you want the taste. I personally infuse my water for 24 hours, or sometimes even 48 hours depending on the fruit I’ve used.

Voss bottles have become another craze within the infused water community—I have 2 and they are perfect for making the water; they are cylindrical bottles, vary in sizes and are made with a thick glass (but they are making plastic ones), if you want a snazzy bottle, you can search for them on Amazon. This is optional mind you, as long as you have a big enough container or jar that can fit chopped fruit you’re good to go!

So go on, give it a try… your water drinking experience will never be the same!
