HBO and BBC One’s His Dark Materials successfully brought Phillip Pullman’s novels to life when it started airing in 2019. It even managed to end on its own terms after it adapted the final book of the trilogy, The Amber Spyglass, in Season 3. Since it already covered all its source material, does that mean Season 4 is out of the question? Maybe so, maybe not.
You see, other than the original trilogy, Pullman has written other books that could serve as potential source materials for Season 4. Furthermore, the third season’s final title card teased that Lyra and Pan would go on to have a further great adventure. Does this mean a fourth season is possible after all? Here’s everything you need to know about His Dark Materials: Season 4.
When Is His Dark Materials: Season 4 Coming Out?
Unfortunately, His Dark Materials: Season 4 has no official release date. His Dark Materials: Season 4 may never come out since the show officially ended. Nonetheless, executive Jane Tranter initially planned to extend the show beyond three seasons.
At the Edinburgh International TV festival, Tranter mentioned: “Honestly, I would have told it across nine seasons if I could have done. There are so many stories that we weren’t able to do. I would have slowed this [His Dark Materials] down even more,” she stated. “But, unfortunately, that’s probably the wrong thing for an audience – some would have liked it, but it’s expensive, and it’s a season-a-book, and that’s that, and now it’s finishing.”
While the main series may be over, His Dark Materials could have spin-offs that cover the other novels Pullman wrote.
What Could His Dark Materials: Season 4 Be About?
The novel’s author, Phillip Pullman, expanded Lyra’s story with The Book of Dust trilogy: La Belle Sauvage, The Secret Commonwealth, and the upcoming third book, which could all serve as potential storylines for a spin-off. In an interview with RadioTimes, Tranter talked about adapting The Book of Dust trilogy.
“La Belle Sauvage has got Lyra as a baby and gives some of Asriel and Coulter’s backstory and some of Lyra’s origin story,” the producer explained. “And The Secret Commonwealth is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I just don’t think there is a better study of depression, in some ways, in a fantasy landscape. It’s the most exciting story, but, like everything Philip does, it has many levels to it. And it’s an extraordinary piece, so huge and ambitious. But if anyone ever gave us the opportunity to do it, we’d be there.”
His Dark Materials: Season 4 Potential Cast
If a fourth season or a spin-off were to be made, these actors may return to reprise their roles:

- Kit Connor as Pantailamon
- Amir Wilson as Will Parry
- Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter
- Will Keen as Father MacPhail
- Simone Kirby as Mary Malone
- Ruta Gedmintas as Serafina Pekkala

Where To Watch His Dark Materials in the US
As of writing, His Dark Materials: Season 4 hasn’t been released anywhere in the US. With the series finished, the show won’t release new episodes in the near future. Although if a spin-off was greenlit, expect it to come out on Max, formerly known as HBO Max, in the US.
You can also watch the previous seasons of His Dark Materials on HBO Max and Spectrum. It’s also available for purchase on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and Google Play.
Where To Watch His Dark Materials in the UK
Like the US, His Dark Materials: Season 4 isn’t available in the UK since the show has ended. But if it were to get future seasons or spin-offs, count on BBC One to stream it for UK viewers.
His Dark Materials’ first three seasons are also available on BBC One, as well as Sky Entertainment. Meanwhile, you can buy episodes on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Microsoft Store, and Google Play.
How Many Episodes Will His Dark Materials: Season 4 Have?
Since the show is done, there will be no episodes of His Dark Materials: Season 4. Nevertheless, a spin-off could follow its predecessor’s format of 7-8 episodes per season. It could potentially be higher, considering how executive producer Jane Tranter said she wanted to slow down the story even more.
