Here’s the Metal Gear Series Explained in 12 Minutes

Derided and loved in equal measure for having a plot about as comprehensible as Mel Gibson after a few beers, the Metal Gear series has been making gamers scratch their heads since 1987.

Hideo Kojima may be many things, but he certainly isn’t someone who knows when to trim the fat. His stories are long and excessively convoluted to the point of nonsense (evidenced pretty spectacularly in Metal Gear Solid 2) and there are more supporting characters than most theatre productions. It’s messy, and yet, it somehow still works. It remains my favourite game series of all-time.

With the upcoming release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on September 1st, GameTrailers decided to put together an explanation of the expansive plot in just under twelve. It’s not perfect, but it does a fine job of getting the basics cleared up.
