The HD Fan Remake of Super Mario 64 is Looking Incredible

Super Mario 64 is nothing short of legendary. It set the mold for almost every other platform that has arrived since it came out and it wasn’t until Super Mario Galaxy that another outing with the plump red plumber even came close to matching it. But as gorgeous as the 2 Galaxy titles are, some will always pine for the original, and the guys behind the new HD remake of it are clearly in that camp. An entirely fan-made, not-for-profit endeavor, updates on progress have been steadily rolling in since last November and now we’ve finally got some deeper insights into the project, courtesy of a developer showcase.

I don’t think I’ll be alone in saying that it looks pretty stunning. The already classic score has been updated to sound more orchestral, all the textures have been updated and all the environments and sprites have had a facelift. The original spirit of the game remains intact though, from what I can tell. At the moment, all the original sound effects are still as they are, which helps to tickle the nostalgia-button effectively, but kind of grates with all the shiny new material (particularly the sound of Mario walking/running). They might well change the sound before a playable version drops. As to that, there is no information on when we’ll see it yet, because it is way, way to early to be talking about that, but you can keep an eye on the project via their Facebook page, which they keep well stocked with updates, links to live streams and developer Q&As. In the mean time, there are plenty of HD reimaginings of older games already available, fan-made or otherwise to keep you all satiated until this bullet bill finally hits.
