Harry Styles in Talks To Play Prince Eric in Disney’s The Little Mermaid

Is he the right guy to kiss the girl?

In a surprising turn of events, Collider reports that Harry Styles is in talks to play Prince Eric in Disney’s live action remake of The Little Mermaid. It is clear that this remake desires to be as progressive (or dare I say controversial) as possible, given the recent news of Halle Bailey’s casting as Ariel.

An interracial coupling would definitely be a new addition to the Disney live action canon. It seems that this remake will be focusing on the music elements a bit more, since both Bailey and Styles are predominantly musicians, though they act as well. Styles made his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and gave a decent performance, holding his own amidst a star-studded cast, while Bailey is currently on TV show Grown-ish.

As with nearly every casting decision for this remake, the news is met with equal doses of excitement and skepticism. Reports of Melissa McCarthy being in talks to play Ursula also met with the same public opinion. So far, no one has any strong reactions to the possible casting of Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay as Scuttle and Flounder, but I guess the stakes aren’t as high for them as they are for the main characters.

Styles recently lost the role of Elvis to Austin Butler for the upcoming Elvis biopic, so getting Prince Eric might be a salve for that wound. As with every casting choice, we should wait for the end product before we take up arms. Styles can certainly pull off the charm of Prince Eric, and looks-wise, he isn’t too far off. So let’s give the young man a chance to kiss the girl, shall we?
