Gothic Horror Film Automata Winds Up On Kickstarter

Lawrie Brewster, the director of films such as Lord of Tears, The Unkindness of Ravens, and The Black Gloves, has taken to Kickstarter to finance his next project, Automata, which is described as a gothic Lovecraft horror.

Brewster will once again be working on the film with his writing partner Sarah Daly, making it their fifth collaboration through their company, Hex Studios. Automata will tell the story of an antiques expert sent to authenticate a notorious three-hundred-year-old clockwork doll known as the ‘Infernal Princess’, which soon takes him under its evil and corrupting influence. The film will star Jamie Scott Gordon, Alexandra Nicole Hulme, Erich Redman, Jonathan Hansler, and Victoria Lucie.

In the press release, Brewster described Automata as “a wild, Gothic thrill-ride inspired by the decadence of Ken Russell’s Gothic, as well as the sensual expressionism of Argento’s Suspiria and Bava’s Black Sabbath.” From that description alone, it sounds like Automata could be the most ambitious Hex Studios film to date.

Daly, on the other hand, has said that Automata will also be one of the studio’s darkest films yet, because of the way in which it will explore “how someone’s idea of love can be perverted by experience, and how that corruption can echo through the ages.”

If you contribute to the Kickstarter campaign, you’ll be privy to a ton of awesome collectibles, including a plush toy of Owlman, the signature Hex Studios monster, and if that isn’t a strong enough reason to donate, we don’t know what is. We can expect to see Automata in December of this year.
