Gorillaz Release ‘Hallelujah Money’ to Coincide with Trump’s Inauguration

Brace yourself, after all the hinting, narrative development and rumour milling, Gorillaz are officially back, and things are getting political.

In case you forgot, or tried to block it out, Donald Trump is being sworn in as US President tomorrow, barring some feat of heroism, or act of god. It’s hardly coincidental, then, that this new Gorillaz track, ‘Hallelujah Money’, is a sharp fanged examination of the past evils of humanity, and their links to money.

The creepy, almost hypnotic video features guest vocalist Benjamin Clementine phasing between crooning and spoken word, while various articles of stock footage play behind him, driving the point of the video home. Gorillaz have never exactly been synonymous with political commentary, but they’ve always been progressive, so this does seem like a logical next step.

Clementine very much is a political commentator, he’s proven that already with his music and spoken word. He shines here, and while Damon Albarn can be heard on the bridge and choral vocals, Clementine is very much the star of this sinister vaudeville show.

This video and track both feel like very self-contained statements, but they’re also a precursor for the next (and likely last) Gorillaz album, which will come out later this year.
