Get Ready for a “Noir-Driven” Batman

Matt Reeves, the director of Cloverfield and the co-writer / director of War for the Planet of the Apes told New Trailer Buzz that he wants The Batman to be a very psychology-driven film while at the same time comparing himself to Hitchcock. Oh God.

So, what exactly does this mean? It seems like we’re going to be dealing with a more detective story with action beats every now and then. Bogart in a batsuit. I suppose.

When Variety announced in January that Ben Affleck had stepped down from the director’s chair, I took this as a good sign. Zack Snyder’s role as auteur on Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice didn’t exactly inspire confidence in the shared universe for a lot of people. When you’re dealing with over 75 years of stories and fandom, it might not be a good idea to have a only one person at the helm. Debate and collaboration are good when you’re dealing with a character that’s not of your own invention.

I’m not sure how wise it is to admit this, but I’ve found at least something to like about the D.C. movies so far and I own more of their movies on home video than Marvel. I don’t know, I guess they speak to the clinical depression in me. I’ll definitely see this one in theaters, and I’m guessing a lot of other people are going to be willing to give The Batman a chance, too, since dark and brooding is what that D.C. movies and Batman do best.

No release date for The Batman has been confirmed, though it’s rumored to be a 2019 release.
