Gears of War began as a fairly straightforward trilogy about Marcus Fenix, then added prequels, a strategy spin-off, a new generation of protagonists and several remasters of the same first game. There was also a Fortnite thing, but don’t worry about that. The Locust were apparently not the only things multiplying underground.
If you’re trying to figure out where elease order remains the clearest route for a first playthrough. It introduces Sera through Marcus’s original campaign before filling in Emergence Day and the earlier war. Chronological order works better for returning players who already know the characters and major revelations.
The Gears of War play order
This is the order in which the games were first released:
Gears of War, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition or Gears of War: Reloaded
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3
Gears of War: Judgment
Gears of War 4
Gears 5
Gears Tactics
Gears 5: Hivebusters
Gears of War: E-Day
Tactics is mechanically separate and can be moved until after Gears 5 without disrupting the main story. Really, you could probably just skip Tactics if you’re only in it for the story.
What is the chronological Gears order?

For a returning player or someone who wants to play the games exactly as the story unfolds, the broad chronology is:
Gears of War: E-Day
Gears of War: Judgment main campaign
Gears Tactics
Gears of War or Reloaded
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3
Judgment: Aftermath
Gears of War 4
Gears 5
Hivebusters
For everybody else, start with Reloaded and follow release order. The prequels will still be waiting once the series has explained why everyone is built like a wardrobe.
Which version of the first Gears of War should you play?
You only need one version of the original campaign, but we’ve actually had three of them.
Gears of War is the 2006 Xbox 360 release.
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is its 2015 remaster, with rebuilt visuals and the additional campaign chapters previously absent from the Xbox 360 version.
Gears of War: Reloaded is the latest remaster, optimised for current hardware and containing the original game’s post-launch content, bonus campaign act, maps and cosmetics.
Reloaded is the simplest modern choice. It does not follow Ultimate Edition in the storyline and there is no reason to finish all three unless comparing nineteen years of increasingly detailed chest-high walls and goatees sounds like a good weekend.
It does? We agree.
Where does Gears of War: Judgment fit?
The main Judgment campaign takes place in the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day, long before Marcus is released from prison in the original game. It follows Damon Baird and Kilo Squad as they defend Halvo Bay.
Chronologically, it belongs near the beginning. New players should still leave it until after Gears of War 3. Judgment was designed as a prequel for an audience familiar with Baird, the Locust and the wider war, and it changes the campaign structure substantially.
It also contains Aftermath, a separate unlockable campaign set during the events of Gears of War 3. Playing all of Judgment before the original trilogy therefore does not produce a clean chronology anyway. Finish Gears 3 first, then play both parts of Judgment. It’s a very okay game, but worth playing to completion.
Is Gears Tactics a prequel?

Yes. Gears Tactics takes place twelve years before the original Gears of War, placing it around two years after E-Day. It follows Gabe Diaz, the father of Kait Diaz, as his squad hunts the Locust geneticist Ukkon.
Its turn-based battles are very different from the cover-shooter campaigns, and its story is largely self-contained. Knowledge of Kait from Gears 4 and Gears 5 gives Gabe’s family connection more weight, which is why release order remains preferable.
You can skip Tactics without losing the central progression from Marcus to Kait. It expands the world rather than acting as a numbered chapter disguised by an unusually honest title.
Where does Gears of War: E-Day go?
Gears of War: E-Day is set fourteen years before the original and depicts the Locust Horde’s first major assault through younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. It is an origin story and a new mainline entry rather than a spin-off.
That makes it the earliest released campaign chronologically. It can be played first because it introduces the invasion directly, but it was created with the history of the existing series behind it. Playing the original trilogy first makes the younger Marcus, Dom and their eventual friendship more meaningful.
E-Day launched on 6 October 2026 for Xbox Series X & S and PC.
How do Gears 4 and Gears 5 connect to the trilogy?
Gears of War 4 begins 25 years after Gears of War 3. It introduces JD Fenix, Kait Diaz and Del Walker while bringing an older Marcus into the new conflict.
Gears 5 directly continues that story, shifting much of the focus towards Kait and her connection to the enemy. Do not start with Gears 5 unless you are prepared to rely heavily on its recap, as its central relationships and revelations begin in the fourth game.
Play the Hivebusters expansion after the main Gears 5 campaign. It follows Scorpio Squad — Lahni, Mac and Keegan — in a separate story tied to the game’s Escape mode. The expansion is included in the Gears 5 Game of the Year Edition.
