Fortnite: How to Unlock Solid Snake (UPDATED)

Fortnite is no stranger to a crossover, with a new IP collaborating with the battle royale behemoth almost every other day. With the launch of Chapter 5 – Season 1 (also known as Underground), players are getting the chance to unlock one of gaming’s most beloved characters, Solid Snake, as a brand new skin, with a couple of styles to boot.

To unlock Solid Snake in Fortnite, players must first purchase the Battle Pass, which costs 950 V-Bucks or a subscription to Fortnite Crew. The Battle Pass will be active for the entirety of Season 1, and will also allow players to unlock Peter Griffin from Family Guy, because Fortnite is a deeply unserious game.

However, as Solid Snake is a bonus skin (previously known as a secret skin) for the Battle Pass, players will not be able to unlock him until 51 days of Season 1 has passed, as Solid Snake will only be unlockable from January 23, 2024. Then, they will need to complete special quests to unlock every piece of the Solid Snake set, with multiple styles being available.

Players must complete four of the following quests in order to unlock Solid Snake in Fortnite:

– Hide in a cardboard box for 10 seconds
– Damage opponents within 10 meters (250 damage)
– Deal damage with explosive (50 damage)
– Damage opponents with assault rifles (500 damage)
– Break security cameras or turrets (2)

There’s nothing too complicated here, as it should all take about five matches in total to complete. Security cameras and turrets can mostly be found near bosses, who are all pinpointed on your map.

Players can also unlock Old Snake, his Metal Gear Solid 4 variant, after unlocking solid Snake by completing five of the following quests:

– Damage opponents with a weapon that has a suppressor (2500 damage)
– Use EMP Stealth Camo (3 times)
– Use a hiding spot in different matches (5 times)
– Assist in opening Vaults or hack Train Heist chests (3 times)
– Damage different enemy players before they damage you (10 players)

These quests are a little more involved and will probably take longer to complete, with a minimum of 5 matches required just to complete one of them. We anticipate it will take around 15 matches in total to unlock Old Snake. A quick tip for opening Vaults: the boat in the west of the map has a Vault and is very rarely ever landed at.

Don’t forget that you can also do damage to henchmen and bosses for some of these damage quests.

Players will also unlock the rest of the Solid Snake cosmetics by completing these challenges.

As mentioned, there are multiple styles for Solid Snake, with three being available in total. Two are the same base model except with Snake’s iconic night vision goggles, and the third is Snake as he’s seen in Metal Gear Solid 4, otherwise known as Old Snake. This is still the same character, but due to the FOXDIE in his blood and him getting close to the age of Big Boss when he was cloned (it’s a lot to explain), he ages much faster.

Players will also be able to unlock a handful of other Metal Gear Solid cosmetics within Fortnite, including a wrap, glider, pickaxe, and what looks like the Metal Gear Mk. II as a back bling.

Metal Gear Solid purists will no doubt feel a little bit weird about seeing their gruff chainsmoker as part of Fortnite, but this is really what the franchise needs for it to remain relevant with a younger generation of potential fans. 2023 has been a big year for the IP with the reveal of a Snake Eater remake and re-release of the old games on modern systems in the form of the Master Collection, as well as some rather smelly aftershave. As someone who’s been starving for more Metal Gear for a decade, the more the merrier.

Fortnite is free-to-play on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android.
