Fortnite: Season 2: What Happened To Building?

The unthinkable has happened: Epic Games has removed building in Fortnite. Well, for the start of Chapter 3 – Season 2, at least.

The change, which was previously revealed in leaked audio logs before players could log-in to Season 2, will affect all core modes for the first 9 days of Fortnite, meaning that building won’t be available until March 29th, 2022 at the earliest.

This is explained narratively by Slone appearing in the story trailer along with the rest of IO and activating some kind of device that wipes all the builds from the island.

Presumably building will be reintroduced back into the core modes with the release of v20.10 on the 29th, which will be the first major update of the season.

There will even be some challenges for the no building week:

– Retrieve IO envelopes with top-secret plans
– Collect Data Chips from destroying electronics belonging to the Seven
– Destroy Build Jammers
– Establish Device Uplink near Camp Cuddle, Chonker’s Speedway, or The Daily Bugle

This is quite the huge change for Fortnite, as building is such a key part of the game’s identity and what separates it from the rest of its battle royale counterparts. Stripping that away is a risk, but it might be exactly what it needs to bring those back who don’t have the time to practice building, at least temporarily. Building won’t be gone for that long, but it will be fascinating to see how the game changes in that time.

Don’t worry if you don’t want to give up building, as you can still use building in Arena, LTMS, and Creative maps.

While building is away, be sure to make the most of the new movement options, including mantling and Tactical Sprinting.

Fortnite is free-to-play on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Android.
