He may be one of the most famous people on the planet, but Leonardo DiCaprio clearly realizes that we won’t have much of a planet left unless we seriously tackle the issue of man-made climate change.
DiCaprio produced and appeared in the feature-length National Geographic documentary Before the Flood, in which he travels the world examining the adverse effects being caused by man-made climate change. Also featured are Pope Francis, US President Barack Obama, US Secretary of State John Kerry, and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The film was released for free on National Geographic’s YouTube channel and in the space of just a few hours has already accumulated over 1.1 million views.
One of the main issues addressed in Before the Flood is how the Republican Party refuses to acknowledge the existence of climate change, and how Republican-controlled media outlets such as Fox News constantly refer to it as a hoax. Hmm, I wonder if this has something to do with the fact that the Republicans receive huge donations from oil and gas companies who also happen to be some of the main contributors to the issue? Combine this with their endless anti-LGBT campaigns, the fact that they constantly try to make laws based on their interpretation of a book which says that the world was created in six days (which goes against the First Amendment), and their overall adversity to logic, and it comes as no surprise that Noam Chomsky said that the party have now become so far-right that they’re off the political spectrum.
This year’s buffoonish Republican Presidential nominee (I won’t even say his name) even called climate change a hoax created by the Chinese and said that he would rip up the Paris Agreement if he gets into office. The Paris Agreement is the essentially the strongest piece of legislation which serves to combat man-made climate change, so let’s just hope that America doesn’t elect the man who also said that he wants to kill entire families if just one member happens to be a terrorist.
