What Is ‘On Fleek’ and Why Am I Seeing It Everywhere?

The constant evolution of the English language amazes me; every single day there is a new word or a new colloquial expression; and the newest (or maybe not so new now..) is ‘on fleek’.

Just one morning, I was scrolling my Instagram timeline and I kept seeing ‘eyebrows on fleek’ and I had to pause for a minute and question OUT LOUD. ‘What in the world does this mean?’ And you don’t want to look like you’re ‘out of the loop’, so I looked at the comments to see if anyone else had asked what it means… and I was very fortunate to find that someone indeed did ask, and all it simply means is ‘They’re on point, meaning it looks good’. Now with me, I’m not an avid slang user, so ‘on fleek’ could have been out a lot longer than when I saw it, but I saw it everywhere. Almost every comment saying that something is ‘on fleek’.

It’s become such a craze, but it’s so funny that ‘on fleek’ seemed to have been birthed due to eyebrows. We all know how many pictures and memes that are floating around on the internet about eyebrows, and the masses of responses that it receives, but now ‘on fleek’ is for everything: ‘Your hair’s on fleek!’ ‘My meal is on fleek’ ‘Look at my toes, they’re on fleek!’ ‘My neck’s on fleek!’ You get the idea.

But just like its predecessor, ‘Bae’ which went so viral and is still being overused now, you wonder where these words come from and how they go viral in an instant! With also being a spelling and grammar nerd (Don’t judge me!) the meaning is much more important, and with words like ‘Bae’, which actually means ‘Before anything else’ but is being used as another way of saying ‘sweetie’ ‘my one and only’ etc, we must all understand what we are saying before we just say it!

The English Language is so amazing with so many variations of words, acronyms, common sayings, and slang, I can understand how it can be such a hard language to learn if it isn’t your first language!

But I really hope that ‘on fleek’ does not make it into the dictionary… or is it already there?
