FIFA 23: How To Play Cross-Play With Friends

Cross Play
Cross Play

After years of asking, FIFA 23 is finally bringing cross-play to the FIFA franchise, allowing players across multiple systems to play each other. However, it’s pretty simple to set-up but also pretty complicated to explain.

To enable cross-play in FIFA 23’s 1v1 modes, go to Customise > Online Settings > Matchmaking Options and then make sure Cross-play enabled is set to Yes. With this on, you should then be able to play other people in cross-play across all of FIFA’s 1v1 modes like FUT and Seasons, though there are only certain modes that you can play with actual friends and not randoms.

Bear in mind that you will need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold if you’re playing on consoles.

Who Can Play With Each Other?

Players on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X & S can all play with each other, while only those on PS4 and Xbox One can play with each other in cross-play.

This is because these are two different versions of the same game, and PS4 and Xbox One are both the previous generation versions of FIFA 23 and therefore unable to keep up with the more modern versions.

However, the transfer market in FUT is the same across all console versions of FIFA 23, while Steam, Epic Games, and Origin all have different transfer markets on PC.

The Nintendo Switch isn’t supported with cross-play at all, as it’s basically FIFA 18.

FIFA 23 Cross-Play Modes

Unfortunately, players can only play FIFA 22 with others in cross-play in any of the game’s 1v1 modes, meaning that they cannot team up with friends to take on others.

Here’s every mode with cross-play enabled:

– FUT Champions (matchmaking only)
– FUT Play A Friend (friends)
– FUT Online Draft (matchmaking only)
– FUT Online Friendlies (matchmaking only)
– FUT Rivals (matchmaking only)
– Online Friendlies (friends)
– Online Seasons (matchmaking only)

This means that you can only play two modes, Online Friendlies and FUT Play A Friend, with friends, while the rest of them can only be played by matchmaking with random players.

Hopefully the system for next year is a little clearer.

FIFA 23 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S, and Switch.
