EXCLUSIVE STREAM: Sam Densmore – Open Marriage

If you have a soft spot for the kind of Pacific North-Western folk music that sounds best when walking along a coastline, pretending you’re in a movie montage while spring cleaning or driving cross country, you need to get acquainted with Sam Densmore.

The Portland resident has played with a number of different alt-rock bands through the years and now he’s striking out on his own. Open Marriage is his debut solo EP, and he’s been kind enough to let us share it with you a few days early. It was recorded almost entirely with the full band playing live, and produced by Mike Coykendall, of M. Ward and She & Him fame.

The name comes from the overriding theme – Densmore was actually in an open marriage up until two years ago. Open marriages are rarely simple arrangements and there’s certainly plenty to talk/sing about in this case. As a complete piece, it definitely feels like the mark of a man who has come to terms with a very difficult thing, and it’s hard not to get sucked in. If you’ve recently been dumped, or even had to break up with someone, I would be amazed if you didn’t come out of the other side of this LP feeling a bit better about it.

The album comes out proper on April 21st. If you like what you heard here, show Sam some support and pick up a copy.
