EVO Online Announced, Smash Ultimate Dropped From Line-Up

Though four more games will take its place.

Evo Online

After the cancellation of EVO 2020, which typically is hosted in Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, the tournament organisers have announced EVO Online, a digital event that’ll bring together the fighting game community for five weekends of tournaments. Check out the announcement below.

The EVO Online event will feature tournaments for almost all the games that were set to be featured at EVO 2020. These games include Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Samurai Shodown, Granblue Fantasy Versus, Soulcalibur VI, Tekken 7, Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r] and the Tournament of Champions, which is an invitational Marvel vs Capcom 2 tournament.

Eagle-eyed fans, or those who have simply read the headline to this article, will notice that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been removed from the line-up. While EVO themselves haven’t offered a statement as to why Smash has been cut, fans replying to the announcement are running with the theory that it’s because Smash Ultimate’s netcode isn’t up to standard.

Still, EVO are giving more than they’re taking here, as they’ve announced four new games will join the line-up with special open tournaments. Those games are Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, Skullgirls: 2nd Encore, Them’s Fighting Herds and Killer Instinct. The inclusion of Skullgirls and Killer Instinct in particular has been praised by the community, as both games are celebrated for their fantastic netcode.

EVO 2020 was scheduled for July 31st to August 2nd, but EVO Online will occur for the four weekends prior, July 4th-5th, July 11th-12th, July 18th-19th and July 25th-26th, before culminating with the originally planned three day weekend. Event information and sign-ups haven’t been announced as of yet, but we’re excited to see how this online event shakes out. Will you be tuning into EVO Online? Sound off in the comments.
