Whilst certainly not one of the most prestigious Academy Awards on offer, the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Award and its winners tend to miss out on their share of the limelight, when the work they do is often vital to the films they’re working on. First awarded in 1981, and at every awards since except 1983, it has become a mainstay of the ceremony, and we’ve got every single winner of the award pictured below.
As you might expect, the list is largely, but not exclusively, made up of sci-fi, horror, and comedy, but there’s a few serious dramas thrown into the mix. Interestingly there’s a few films on there which are, to put it kindly, the type of thing that wouldn’t be anywhere near any of the more prestigious awards in a million years. Thinking about it, it’s pretty nice that even if a film wasn’t great, the makeup department can get props for doing a damn fine job. Additionally, check out how the quality of the makeup gradually improves over time. Terminator 2 is a real highlight, far exceeding the quality of the films that precede and succeed it.
