Epic Games’ Donald Mustard has revealed to a crowd at E3 2019 that Keanu Reeves collaborated on an official John Wick skin for Fortnite with Epic after the actor was constantly being approached by kids and being called “Fortnite guy”.
Transcribed by The Independent, Mustard told the crowd how he had previously met Reeves, who was unaware of what Fortnite actually was at the time, hence the confusion with the constant accosting from kids.
“I happened to end up in a spot where Keanu and I were together, talking about some stuff, and we were like, ‘What if this kinda made sense?’ And [Reeves] was into it, especially because we have this character in Fortnite called The Reaper which kind of – it wasn’t intentional – [resembles him].
“But [Reeves] was starting to have all these kids come up to him, all these teenagers on the street, and they weren’t doing the normal, ‘Oh you’re Neo, oh you’re Wick,’ – they were doing, ‘Fortnite guy! Fortnite guy!'”
(I find it exceedingly hard to believe that the original Fortnite skin, The Reaper, was not based on Reeves’ character in the John Wick movies. Baba Yaga and The Reaper? Come on now.)
Mustard continued, saying that Reeves wanted to make the homage a reality:
“[Reeves] was like ‘What is this Fortnite thing?’ And then of course he’s like, ‘That doesn’t look like me, that’s not me,’ and he’s like, ‘We gotta do it right?'”
And so the official tie-in was born, as well as the LTM. The official skin was revealed in an announcement that saw John Wick come face-to-face with The Reaper. You cannot buy the proper John Wick skin right now, but it was a Legendary item that cost 1000 V-Bucks.
