Electronic Essentials of the Week: SBTRKT, Jauz, The Gremlins

Electronic music is known for its huge variety of sounds and styles, with thousands upon thousands of ever-different tracks being released every day. It is often impossible to know where to start so each week we will be selecting the best of the best in the scene to help you get the most out of one of the most varied and unpredictable genres.

Yellow Claw – Blood for Mercy

The much hyped debut album from the Dutch trap trio finally dropped and is every bit as good as hoped. This is by far one of the most ambitious releases of the year, with the group pushing their well-honed sound to create 16 truly unique and incredibly addictive tracks that have surprises around every corner, with a wealth of brilliant guest talent including Ty Dolla Sign, Pusha T, DJ Mustard and Flux Pavilion and every tune is on point, whether it be a firestarting festival beat or a more mellow mover.

Adele – Chasing Pavements (SBTRKT Remix)

The highly talented and ever exciting SBTRKT sneaks this unreleased 2009 remix onto Soundcloud, offering a fresh spin on the much-remixed singer. Hypnotic synths form the core of the track, with a catchy old-school beat and nicely chopped vocals spicing it up. Thank god this track saw the light of day as otherwise we would never have heard this enticing tune that smacks of the heyday of the post-dubstep scene.

Yung Lean – Ghostrider

Yung Lean bursts back onto the radar with a number of fresh tracks, including the outrageous Hoover and his latest Ghostrider, with the excellent production of Woesum planting it somewhere between electronic and hip hop. A pure, ambient tune that sees a return to Lean’s distinctive musical roots, with a suitably trippy video to accompany the evocative beats and catchy lyricism.

Knife Party – PLUR Police (Jauz Remix)

By far the standout track on Knife Party’s new Trigger Warning EP, Jauz harks back to the old dubstep style that the post-Pendulum duo first made their name with. A brutal bass blast that moves at breakneck speed, dirty sounds abound in this insane take on the original, accompanied by an epic breakdown that leaves us in awe of Jauz’s mercurial talents and unstoppable rise.

Speed Round

– Flosstradamus & GTA – Prison Riot VIP (From out of nowhere, this absolutely fire original is reworked into a hyped track that can’t be stopped)
– The Gremlins – Planet Apez (Combines the vocal work of the recently deceased Sean Price with disgusting dubstep drops of immense proportions)
– Disclosure & Lorde – Magnets (A-Trak Remix) (A delightfully smooth and upbeat spin on the Disclosure original, becoming an a grade A-Trak tune)

– GTA – Death to Genres Vol. 2 (GTA return for round 2, delivering another knockout blow of massive moombah and heavy hardstyle with LCA being the huge highlight)
