E3 2018: PS4 Exclusive The Last of Us 2 Gets Gameplay Trailer, No Release Date

The Last of us 2

Gustavo Santaolalla, composer for The Last of Us 2, took to the stage at Sony’s E3 2018 press conference to play a banjo (quite beautifully, even if it peaked a lot) before the presentation of The Last of Us 2 began.

The action then cut to a new cutscene from the game, which aptly took place in a tent just like the presentation. Ellie is seen at a bar looking forlorn and drinking with no Joel in sight before she is approached by a man.

They chat about how much they hate socialising, and then Joel is referenced. At this point, it looks like a flashback. Ellie and Rose, her love interest, are seen slowly dancing on the dancefloor before the pair eventually kiss. That will go down with the dark corners of YouTube.

We then cut to what looks like the present with Ellie dispatching of a nameless guy, and then gameplay! Ellie crouchwalks through water and comes across water with enemies whistling to each other to track her down.

She makes her way through the forest before eventually coming across a small congregation, something that looks like a cult. Ellie backs off and back into the foliage, the grass reacting beautifully as she goes.

Ellie climbs into a parking lot and takes cover before unsheathing her bow and doing her thing. Crafting returns as Ellie picks up an object, as well as the sightline warnings from the first game. An enemy refers to her as wolf before she gets in a huge and impressive looking tussle, forcing her to make a quick escape.

Hiding in the tall grass, Ellie then moves under a truck and someone who sounds like Tess starts speaking, but then Ellie shoots her in the face anyway. A QTE kicks in when she is ambushed before she shoots him down, after which she keeps taking damage before fleeing again.

Bottles are back, as Ellie flings one at an attacker before retreating into a store and administering treatment for her wounds. She stalks around the store to evade her attackers and moves into a growth of grass. Stealth is going to be a huge part of this game. She plucks the arrow out of a corpse and then does some more lovely looking murder. This is incredibly cinematic and obviously scripted but damn I am impressed.

She gets the better of one of her attackers, who mentions something about a sacrifice. Ellie finishes him off in brutal fashion as the camera pans around to the back of her head and we’re back at the dance. Cue title. No release date.
