E3 2014: No Man’s Sky Steals the Show at Sony Conference

There was plenty to get excited about in Sony’s E3 press-conference this year. They offered us extended looks at new franchise entries, new IPs and HD revamps of classic titles but one particular game stood out like a blazing supernova: No Man’s Sky.

We’ve known about No Man’s Sky for a while now, it was announced by developers Hello Games at VGX last year and even then it was a bit of a head turner, a game predicated on interplanetary exploration in which the player is supplied with a ship and an unknown universe, procedurally generating planets, wildlife, space fleets and anything else that you care to imagine.

Returning for E3, the developers gifted us with a new gameplay trailer, which you can watch below, but fair warning it may make your eyes melt.

It looks somewhere between Eve Online, Elite, Metroid Prime, Mass Effect and Minecraft, which is a combination that should probably be outlawed, since it likely has the potential to reduce even the most outgoing individual to a pale, sleepless shut-in. Taking much loved franchises into the next generation is all well and good, but Hello Games are basically making the game that we’ve all wanted since gaming began, as announcements go that’s pretty hard to top.
