E3 2014: Battlefront, The Witcher 3 and Play TV Showcased

E3 2014

Oliver Dixon takes a look at three of the biggest announcements from E3 2014.

Star Wars Battlefront

Battlefront

I cannot even believe my eyes, IVE WATCED THIS TEN TIMES AND IT WONT STOP GETTING BETTER. Star Wars fucking Battlefront. YEAHHHHHHHH.

Watch the video again, then again and once more. Now you’re feeling it. After consistently playing BF2 from release to like, a few months ago, its been a constant friend in the shitty world of online FPS, and now DICE studios are upping the ante, in a big fucking way. Stalking through the Lucas cultural museum and visiting the old set locations, these guys are dedicating a whole fucking lot to make a game for the fans, by the fans

Watching the footage of ‘early in-game engine’ made me wee a bit, loosing control of my body functions from a metric shit ton of joy. It truly looks like the sequel BF2 deserved, but sadly I’ll keep my reservations a little longer, as no release date was announced and theres no way to know how DICE are going to treat local co-op, a corner stone of its predecessor and something sadly missing so much these days. But still, a promise of a game is far better than stoned conversations and thigh rubbing over what BF3 would hold one day, so yeah! PARTY ON.

The Witcher 3

The Witcher 3

Witcher 2 was sick, a real game changer in a fairly worn genre, bringing a previously unseen level of tactics and surgical fighting styles to a dynamic story in a brilliant fantasy world. Now Witcher 3, has just blown the top off of fan speculation in a BEAUTIFUL way, showing a magical new realm of possibility.

With giddy joy I watched Geralt, in all his Witchery glory, hunt and slay a fucking Griffin. The environments look crazy detailed and utterly beautiful, a forest that is staggering in-depth. Using a witcher power, geralt tracks the Griffins blood, only to stumble upon some brigands. I giggled like a school girl as Geralt blasted and slashed through the bandits, demonstrating a excellent, more fluid fighting system. After the fightings done, a herbalist pops up and opens up a new sidequest, declaring just how dynamic the map is with cross quest interaction, promising many lost hours and happy hunts in an ever changing world. Wondering what the consequences of my decisions will be, how it will shape what seems to be an entire god damn continent, The Witcher 3 is promising to reinvent the fantasy genre in a huge way, striding swiftly towards Skyrim’s dusty crown.

PS TV

PS TV

Whilst not strictly a game, this is something I’m very excited to see announced. PS TV is a set top box and streaming device, much like Google Chromecast/Apple TV. Although offering little in new content/functionality at the minute, its considered the launching block of PS Now, something with infinite possibilities.

Offering a subscription based service to play any game in Sony’s library, without a console? Fucking sign me up now, cause this sound righteous. The possibility is mind boggling, and my thumbs are itching to pick up a Sony controller once more and smash all my favourite games for very little scratch. With a release date of Autumn and a price of £84.99 it seems well worth the investment, even if right from release it may be stunted, room to grow is certainly needed but I’m guessing it’s going to pay back any commitment tenfold.

Good ol’ Sony providing once again. Shame I’m not getting a PS4 because the cross TV does look good, if a little gimmicky.
