Being a daring adventurer, you’re going to need the best gear possible if you’re going to survive in the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2, and while you might be able to coast by on the equipment you buy or scavenge, upgrading your weapons and armour is a surefire way to improve your survivability.

Upgrading equipment is a feature you unlock when you reach Vermund’s capital city of Vernmouth. In order to upgrade your equipment, you need to speak to one of the three vendors found on the right hand side of the merchant’s square. Talk to them, and you’ll be given the option to enhance your weapons and armour.

Each item has up to three upgrades, with the first upgrade only costing a small amount of gold, while the second two upgrades requiring various materials you can find from killing monsters and gathering materials out in the world. Because you can simply purchase the first upgrade for all your gear, it’s always worth investing in that, just to get that additional edge over the various monsters roaming the land.

Something to keep in mind about upgrading weapons and armour is that, depending on whether you’re in Vermund, Battahl or the Elven town of Sacred Arbor, upgrades will have different functions and even require different materials. The main difference between Vermund and Battahl is that Vermund upgrades offer decent stat boosts and weight reduction, while Battahl offer better stat boosts at the cost of increased weight. We’re not sure yet what the difference is with Sacred Arbor, but it’s probably magic related. Elves, am I right?

In the later stages of the game, you can also visit the Dragon Forged in a cave north of Battahl, on the Olta’Battahl Coastline. A former Arisen, the Dragon Forged can use the Wyrmslife Crystals found after beating up the various dragons found across the world map. Here, you can enhance your weapons and gear for a fourth time, so long as you have the crystals and the gear in question has been upgraded to the maximum level.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is available now on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X & S.
