Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series is probably the biggest selling book series never to have made it to the big screen. Now though, Pratchett’s young adult Wee Free Men is set to become a movie, courtesy of Discworld production company Narrativia and the Jim Henson Company.

Now, Wee Free Men has been the subject of movie pushes before, with the one and only Sam Raimi at one point ready to helm an adaptation. This new outing, however, looks aimed at ensuring maximum authenticity to the book series. The script reportedly comes from Rhianna Pratchett herself, daughter of Terry and a co-founder of Narrativia itself.

In a press release, the script writer said: ‘I’ve loved the Jim Henson Company’s work all my life, so it’s a great honour to team up with them and bring Wee Free Men to the big screen.’

Henson is most widely known as the creator of The Muppets, though his production company has continued to work on other projects since his death in 1990. This includes TV shows such as Farscape and ABC’s 90s sitcom Dinosaurs.

So what’s Wee Free Men all about? Set on the Discworld (obviously), it follows the journey of Tiffany Aching, a frying pan wielding nine year old who finds out she might be a witch. There’s fairies, monsters and tiny blue men who talk in thick Glaswegian accents.

With Young Adult fantasy and science fiction such a big draw at the box office, Tiffany Aching’s story (which stretches over five novels) might be the obvious choice for a Discworld adaptation. Whether it can make money is a big question mark, but if it can expect further films down the line.
