Speaking to Empire, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed that the sixth film in the Die Hard franchise, which was previously being referred to as Die Hard Year One, will now be titled McClane, after John McClane, the hero cop played by Bruce Willis in all the movies in the series to date.

He explains that this is because they are hoping that the audience will develop a deeper emotional connection with the character than ever before, saying:

“You can tell our intention by the fact that the title page we handed in says, ‘McCLANE’. We want you to get invested in John McClane more than ever before.”

The film will cut back and forth between sequences depicting a 60-year-old McClane, once again played by Willis, and scenes of him in his twenties as an NYPD rookie, played by a currently unconfirmed actor. Hopefully not Joseph Gordon-Levitt covered with Bruce Willis makeup, because we saw enough of that in Looper.

di Bonaventura assured fans that although we’ll be introduced to a younger version of McClane, Willis will still have an equal amount of screen time, because, in his own words, “I don’t know how you do Die Hard without Bruce.”

McClane will once again be directed by Len Wiseman, who was also behind 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard. Writers Carey W. Hayes and Chad Hayes completed the script in July, with filming set to begin fairly soon. A release date has not yet been specified.
