Dragon Age fan-favourite Varric Tethras is soon going to be a published author in our own world, with his in-game book “Hard in Hightown” coming out from Dark Horse Books later this year.

“Hard in Hightown” is a tale that will be familiar to Dragon Age fans, as an in-game text that tells of the adventures of some of Kirkwall’s inhabitants throughout the colourful district of Hightown. (If you’re not a Dragon Age fan–for shame!–Hightown/Kirkwall are locations in Dragon Age 2.) Various chapters of the text can be found scattered throughout Dragon Age: Inquisition as codex entries.

The distributors of Hard in Hightown, Penguin Random House, have also released an official description of the novel:

Twenty years of patrols have chiseled each and every stone of the Kirkwall streets into city guardsmen Donnen Brennokovic. Weary and weathered, Donnen is paired with a recruit so green he might as well have leaves growing out of his armor. When the mismatched pair discover a dead magistrate bleeding out on the flagstones, they’re caught up in a clash between a shadowy organization known only as the Executors and a secretive group of Chantry agents–all over some ancient artifact.

Varric is credited as the book’s author, and the novel is supposedly “co-written” by BioWare’s Mary Kirby: the book’s actual writer. The book’s illustrations are by Stefano Martino, Álvaro Sarraseca, Andres Ponce, and Ricardo German Ponce Torres. The cover art is by E.M. Gist.

It might seem like a strange time for a Dragon Age novel to be released–especially one written by an in-game character–but Dragon Age fans are always thirsty for more lore and worldbuilding, and Varric’s popularity as a character will probably help Hard in Hightown’s sales a great deal. (Everyone just loves that Dwarven chest hair!)

The book is due for release on the 31st of July 2018, and you can pre-order it from US Amazon by clicking here. At the time of writing, it is also available for pre-order from international Amazon sites, such as the UK.
