Daily Tune: Shadow Child – Ooh Tune

What do you get when you cross a glitchy, eerie vocal, some crisp, heavy house cymbals, and old school upbeat piano line and a bass drum thump so heavy it burrows into your ribcage? Why, you get Shadow Child, of course! He’s been a mainstay in house and techno music for years, both through his Food Music label and his regular show on Rinse FM.

As a producer, he’s almost impossible to nail down, dabbling in everything from sinister atmospherics to heavy bangers to this new one, Ooh Tune, which, despite the name, sits somewhere in the middle. It’s a creeper, a wrong-footer. From the get-go the house beat structure is obvious, and the bass and the ominous, rising ‘Oooooooh’ suggest that things are going to take more of an ambient, sinister tone, but then the piano comes in and things take a turn for the jubilant.

Shadow Child has been touring like crazy for most of this year, so it’s nice to see some new material dropping, especially something as playful and memorable as this. There’s no indication of any larger release on the immediate horizon, but the very fact that he’s been in the studio working on stuff is very exciting, Keep an ear to the ground and wait for it to start pumping.
