When Phantom Liberty was first announced, a lot of Cyberpunk fans’ first thoughts might have been, “where’s Johnny?” and then quickly followed up by, “how much Johnny?” For most games with large expansions (which really doesn’t happen all that much these days), you can usually see that some fat in the budget is being trimmed, whether that’s by pulling back the ambition a little bit, or not involving celebrity performances that appeared in the main game. With that in mind, just how much does Keanu Reeves actually appear in Phantom Liberty as Johnny Silverhand, V’s soul-sucking chum?
Well, you will be pleased to hear that Keanu Reeves is involved pretty much throughout the entirety of the Phantom Liberty DLC to an almost surprising degree. Apart from a very brief section early on, Johnny pops up in basically every main mission to quip away and bring some much needed cynicism to literally everything. CD Projekt Red didn’t stop there, as he also makes an appearance in a whole load of side quests, even random gigs, to the point where it feels like he may be in Phantom Liberty even more than in the base game.
If you’re hoping for your Silverhand fix in Phantom Liberty, you won’t be disappointed.
Keanu Reeves is basically synonymous with Cyberpunk 2077, so it would feel a little strange for him to disappear for this encore. From the E3 (RIP) appearances to the many memes, Johnny Silverhand is as much a main character as the player character. And considering he’s a rockstar-turned-terrorist who basically negs V for anything they do, he can also be pretty charming too.
The sheer volume of Johnny may explain why Phantom Liberty’s nudget is higher than previous CD Projekt expansions, and it’s also doubtful that Idris Elba as Reed came that cheap either. There are even some setpieces that are as ambitious and bombastic as those in the base game — CD Projekt Red really seem to have gone all out to make Cyberpunk’s one planned expansion as big as it can be.
