Recently released into its beta stages, Red Dead Online is the multiplayer portion of Red Dead Redemption 2 that threatens to take over the lives of everyone who plays it. The addiction starts off early with a character creator that may consume you if you allow it.
I spent a good few minutes messing around with the character creator, which you can check out the footage of down below.
There’s a decent amount of customisation here, but I think it’s period accurate by making it very difficult to create someone who doesn’t look like they have a debilitating venereal disease. It is the Old West, after all.
It starts off quite similarly to GTA Online with you basically being in a line-up and fiddling with things until you become the perfect criminal. There’s good depth but not to the degree of, say, Black Desert Online. It’s certainly a step up from GTA Online though, I saw the same generic potatofaces in that over and over again.
You are given presets for a lot of the areas of your appearance but can also drill down deeper into them by pressing X (presumably A on Xbox One). It’s clear that you will be able to make some absolute monstrosities, so I am expecting to go up against a posse full of Sloths at some point.
It’s also vital that you get your beard and hair right from the beginning as the barber isn’t exactly cheap. It shouldn’t cost $18 for a haircut from over a hundred years ago, but here we are. You don’t earn a great deal in the early stages, either, so you’ll want to hang onto any coins you can.
A pretty decent character creator, all in all. I’ve made my guy as unconventionally handsome as I can, kind of like a cross between the Affleck brothers. I can’t to take Melons across the Red Dead Redemption 2 map and awkwardly emote at other players forevemore.
I’m currently playing through Red Dead Online to see how it’s shaping up and to write my thoughts down. So far? It’s good, though possibly too hamstrung by some of the mechanics from the single-player to be something you can just dip in and out of.
From our Red Dead Redemption 2 review:
“Despite it having some wrinkles, Red Dead Redemption 2 introduces more than enough innovations to provide one of the most immersive and captivating open world games ever made.”
