Fortnite has been constantly updated (its battle royale form, at least) since it launched last year. This season has seen a huge overhaul in the basics of the game, which includes nerfs to certain guns, new ways to traverse the map, and also new items.
We’ve already seen the Submachine Gun being added this season and it looks like we may be getting another during the next content update. According to a message that appears when you’re in-game, we’ll be able to check out the Compact SMG very soon.

For anyone who hasn’t played an FPS before, the Compact SMG is a P90. The unusual firearm is known for having a high rate of fire but terrible recoil and spread, which means it should fit right in in Fortnite. The gun also typically has large clips, which means it will probably be able to rip through builds with sustained fire. It will most likely handle a lot like the Drum Gun: deadly up close, useless from even medium distance.
The Compact SMG had actually already been leaked ahead of the official announcement by various dataminers. Two Epic Buddies tweeted this out a month ago:

What’s interesting here is that this will be the first SMG of any kind to be available as Legendary (i.e. gold). The Tactical SMG was available up to Epic (purple) but the Submachine Gun and its suppressed variant only goes up to a Rare (blue). The burst rifle finally received its own Epic and Legendary with the FAMAS, and now it looks like it’s the turn of the SMG.
This is an interesting twist on things that certainly seems to prove that Epic are very much leading the game away from shotgun dependence, as well as building. Any SMG can tear through builds and you’d have to expect the same of the Compact SMG. There are mixed feelings on the current meta, so it will be intriguing to see how this introduction is received.
