The Coen Brothers’ Next Project Is A TV Western

The golden age of TV westerns is long gone. Shows like Bonanza and Rawhide are television history, and western fans must today suffer through years of nothing intercut with the occasional Deadwood (we’re not counting Westworld, that’s cheating). If you don’t mind your cowboys seasoned with a dash of Coen Brothers though, we’ve got some good news. The legendary sibling writer directors will next be working on The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a six episode miniseries.

This new western reportedly tells six different stories, as you might typically expect from a Coen Brothers flick. Exactly why and how The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a miniseries and not a film is uncertain. Perhaps the Coens just got half way through the screenplay and realised they’d already written two entire films.

While The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will be the first TV show to have the Coens in the driving seat, it is not the pair’s first western. Both True Grit and No Country for Old Men offered different variations on the western genre. Which way this new project leans so far remains an open question.
