Chris Pine Goes Medieval In First Trailer For Netflix’s Outlaw King

Outlaw King

Netflix has released the first trailer for their upcoming historical epic Outlaw King, which stars Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce, who was king of Scotland from 1306-1329.

The film is directed by David Mackenzie, who also directed Pine in Hell or High Water, and has an estimated production budget of $85 million, making it Netflix’s second most expensive original film after last year’s Bright. We can clearly see the huge budget on display in the trailer, in both the lavish sets and the epic battle sequences. The fact that this is a Netflix production means they don’t have to worry about securing a PG-13 rating, so we can probably expect the battles to be brutal and bloody instead of cutting away whenever a blade makes an impact.

The film will focus on the first war of Scottish Independence against England, with Bruce leading the charge. Just like the last time Hollywood treated us to a big budget account of Scotland’s continued fight for independence, we also learn from the trailer that Pine will be delivering a rousing Braveheart-style speech to his men. Pine’s Scottish accent, which can also be heard in the trailer, sounds like he made a real effort instead of just watching a few episodes of Shetland and calling it a day.

Outlaw King will receive its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, before being released on Netflix and in select theaters on November 9. In addition to Pine, it also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh, Billy Howle, Alastair Mackenzie, James Cosmo, and Callan Mulvey.
