When I first read this book, I left it slightly confused and underwhelmed. I’m a 30-year-old man, and, while I have plenty of nieces and nephews who I see on occasion, I don’t have any children of my own. I opened my mind when I read it, but perhaps I didn’t open it enough. Sure, the artwork is lovely and the story is easy enough to follow, but I just didn’t understand it initially.

A good book will make you ponder on it’s message after you’ve finished it. A great book will not leave your mind until you’ve explored every facet of it through life experiences that make you appreciate it more and more.

Several days after my first few attempts at reading It Was So Quiet, I Could Hear A Pin Drop, I sat down during my break to meditate and practice mindfulness. While I normally do my best to tune out the sounds of my office, I found myself appreciating the beauty in the cacophony around me. I had to return for another read.

While simple in design, the art fits the tone and pace of the story. I pondered the pictures while my mental surround sound filled my consciousness with the sounds described. Goodman’s world enveloped me more with every flip of the page.

I realized the second (and third and fourth) time reading that I should have focused less on opening up my mind and more on opening up my heart. We never lose our inner child; they remain dormant until a book like this stirs them from their slumber. This book is marketed towards children from ages 3-6, but I expect that their parents will get just as much from reading this to their young ones as the young ones will themselves.

I can hardly wait to share this with my niece during her next visit!
