Biggest Upcoming Superhero Movies of 2018

Black Panther

With Mark Ruffalo having accidentally livestreamed the audio of the first fifteen minutes of Thor: Ragnarok, and Justice League not explicitly showing Superman alive and kicking in any promotional material, there seems to be different secrecy standards for the two superhero movie giants. After Justice League hits the silver screen, we won’t have any more caped heroes gracing our screens for a while, but when next year hits, we’ll have nine new superhero movies coming our way.

Black Panther (Disney/Marvel)

Clawing into the cinema on: February 16, 2018

Just like this year’s Wonder Woman, Black Panther is looking to be a movie that will hopefully change Hollywood’s minds on what a superhero movie should be. No need to have only white men looking good and fighting evil, when you can have both men and women from many different heritages looking good and fighting evil. Although Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis will be in the movie, the largest part of the plot seems to be revolving around the fictional African kingdom of Wakanda, and its titular king Black Panther. Judging by what we’ve seen it looks like it’ll be highly interesting and hopefully one of the better Marvel movies.

The New Mutants (Fox/Marvel)

Unsheathe your claws on: April 13, 2018

Despite being the second earliest release on this list, it was probably the one announced the closest to its release date. A new take on the superhero genre (at least in movies), The New Mutants will be a supernatural horror movie focussing on young mutants who start discovering their powers while they’re trapped in a secret facility. The experience of sudden extreme bodily changes on a mutant level definitely lends itself to a horror movie, especially with all the uncertainty and psychological trauma that comes from being cast out by your own family because of these changes. Combine this with a creepy reverend and you’ve got yourself the recipe for The X-orcist – wait, no, The New Mutants.

The Avengers: Infinity War (Disney/Marvel)

The Avengers
No official material has been released just yet.

Assemble on: May 4, 2018

This is the movie Marvel fans have undoubtedly waiting for, as The Avengers and The Guardians of the Galaxy face off against the evil Thanos, who at some point in the movie will have to kill Vision to get an Infinity Gem, as well as rob Dr Strange of his eye of Agamotto. After the many failed attempts of Loki, Ronan the Accuser, and the many other henchmen that Thanos has undoubtedly sent after the gems, he’s decided to do it himself, which will mean death and destruction will reign in this first half of the epic battle between good and evil, only for Nebula to go full badass and claim the gauntlet as her own, whooping her dad’s ass and saving the day, resurrecting everyone whose contract hasn’t expired.

Deadpool 2

Deadpool movie

Cover your ugly face on: June 1, 2018

Despite some people hating on the casting of Zazie Beetz as Domino in the sequel to the 2016 hit Deadpool, the merc with a mouth will be back next year. Even if the character’s best stories are the ones where he’s a sad clown, and his absolute worst stories are the ones where he’s just joking around the whole time, the first movie had to generate some popularity, though one can hope that this sequel will do the character more justice. Ryan Reynolds can definitely pull it off, so let’s hope that the next movie doesn’t go on the jokes-everywhere route.

The Incredibles 2 (Disney/Pixar)

Lose your super suit on: June 15, 2018

Almost fifteen years too late, the sequel to the smash hit The Incredibles that left fans of all ages aching for more until most of those who were kids when they watched it had kids of their own is finally on its way, as a trailer hit in June, with fashion moguls describing Edna Mode as the most amazing visionary fashionista of all time. We don’t know much other than that, but we can only hope the wait was worth it, even if it’s almost certain that Pixar will deliver another hit. Disney’s Fantastic Four before Fox did the Fantastic Four justice will definitely be fun for the whole family.

Ant-Man & The Wasp (Disney/Marvel)

Ant-Man

Ant-icipate the action on: July 6, 2018

After the fun of the original Ant Man movie, Ant-Man & The Wasp will have Scott Lang team up with Hope van Dyne as Dr. Hank Pym, known in the comics for being a notorious jerk and wife-beater, as well as having built Ultron (although in the movies, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner take the blame for that) has a new mission for them. Unlike last time, Hope van Dyne has to suit up too as The Wasp as she and Scott work together to micromanage secrets from their past.

Venom (Sony/Marvel)

Swing your way into cinemas on: October 5, 2018

After the fairly unsuccessful Amazing Spider-Man 2 that many felt fell into the same traps as Spider-Man 3, and Spider-Man: Homecoming, which had many in an uproar because they felt betrayed by the fact that MJ wasn’t who they thought she would be, comes Venom, the Spider-Man spin-off movie that isn’t in the MCU or the Amazing Spider-Man universe. Sadly, the planned Sinister Six spin-off never really got into full swing and not much is known about Venom, except for the fact that Eddie Brock will be playing the titular anti-hero. It’ll be interesting to see which interpretation from the comics they decide to adapt.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Fox/Marvel)

Dark Phoenix

X-pect it on: November 2, 2018

Although X-Men: Apocalypse got a lot of flak for its advertisements, it was a fairly enjoyable movie, especially the Quicksilver scene, which was a lot of fun. What it definitely started doing properly was setting up for Jean Grey as Dark Phoenix. Even if it would’ve been good to have a movie more of exposition before setting up the big guns, it would’ve also been fairly weird if Jean Grey was just sitting at the academy having nightmares and being useless for two movies before finally using her extremely powerful abilities for the first time. Now that she’s used them, it’s time to see her fall to villainy. This should be fun.

Aquaman (DC)

Justice League
Source: HDWallpapers

Surfing in on: December 21, 2018

Directed by James Wan, known for Saw, Aquaman will most likely be a terrifying look into the deep sea. Rightly so, as anyone who has seen even a single documentary about it will know that it’s absolutely horrifying. Combine that with Jason Momoa’s physique and we might have a version of Atlantis that’s much less friendly than what we’re used to. Not only that, but it’ll be interesting to see how aggressive this version of Aquaman will be, as we’ve already seen from the Justice League trailers that he’s very much a surfer dude.

Those were the superhero movies coming in 2018! Which ones are you looking forward to most? Are there any you’ll only catch when they hit DVD, or ones that you’ll even fully pass on?
