DOOM Eternal is one of 2020’s greatest games, an FPS title with a sense of speed and glorious violence unlike anything out there. Once you’ve completed the beefy main campaign, collected all the cheats, and found all the secrets, what’s there left to do? Well, the best DOOM Eternal mods will keep you ripping and tearing for many hours yet.
From simple weapon switches to all new modes, the mods for DOOM Eternal are certainly varied, even if there’s no official mod support for the game just yet. Despite that, modders haven’t wasted much time since Eternal’s release to make the most of what they’ve got with some brilliant “new” content.
Here are the DOOM Eternal mods you should be checking out if you’ve done everything there is to do, or just want a different experience.
The Sentinel Hammer is an almighty tool in Doomguy’s arsenal, but it’s only available for around two thirds of The Ancient Gods – Part Two, or around two hours of playtime in total. That’s a shame.
New Game Plus With Hammer is here to fix that with a mod that makes the Sentinel Hammer available through the entirety of DOOM Eternal’s main campaign. Sure, it might be utterly broken and beyond imbalanced, but if you want to feel as close to a god without turning on god mode, this mod is the one for you.
If you love old school DOOM, this is the Eternal mod for you as it leaves all dead bodies on the floor instead of them vanishing away, just like the original game. Want to look at your battlefield after you’ve conquered it? Check out Keep the Dead.
Okay, so when I say “bodies”, I really mean “the bits of meat left over” once you’re done glory killing everything in sight. Bear in mind that having so many persistent assets may ding your game’s technical performance down somewhat, so be wary using this mod if your setup isn’t anything great. Will also work with DOOM 2016.
Once you’ve conquered Nightmare (and maybe even Ultra Nightmare, if you’re crazy), there’s little else for you to do in DOOM Eternal — you’ve ascended to among the elite players. Enter Horde Mode, which is basically the Bloody Palace mode for Eternal that would have made id and Bethesda a lot of money had they added it natively.
Taking place across increasingly difficult rounds, players start off with just the basic Combat Shotgun before eventually unlocking all weapons, runes, and all of the trimmings that make the Slayer so strong. If you die, that’s it — you have to start your run all over again. Definitely one for the sweatiest of DOOM players.
Another Eternal mod intended for those who have mastered pretty much everything there is to master in the game, proteh’s Enemy Randomizer varies up the spawn of every demon so you never know what kind of battle you’re going to be walking into. When mastery is often contingent on memory, this can throw even the best players for a loop.
What this means is that you will be basically playing a different game each time with some nice and nasty surprises along the way. Sometimes you will just get a Caco and Arachno, others you will get Archviles and Tyrants. Play this mod if you want to be challenged.
Runes are brilliant little game-changers in Eternal, giving Doomguy extra abilities that allow him to slow down time in the air, perform quicker glory kills, and much, much more. Unfortunately, you can only select three out of the nine runes at a time throughout the course of the campaign.
Three Runes To Rule Them All is the answer to that as it allows you to equip all nine at once. This utterly, utterly breaks the challenge in the game, but if you want the ultimate power fantasy, there’s nothing cooler than playing as the Slayer at his most souped up. Plus, it gives you the chance to play around with the lesser runes that you otherwise never would.
How To Install DOOM Eternal Mods
As mentioned, there’s no native mod support for DOOM Eternal at this time of writing. This honestly isn’t all that surprising as most AAA games don’t get “opened up” for at least a couple of years after launch, if they ever do at all.
Instead, follow the instructions for each Eternal mod as closely as you can, making sure you look up any terminology you don’t understand as playing around with files can be a bit tricky. While you won’t need programming knowledge or anything like that to enable DOOM mods, you will need to know what you’re doing on a basic level.
DOOM Eternal is available now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
