Battleborn Flops Hard, But 2K Aren’t Done With it Yet

Battleborn

It doesn’t take the release of 2K’s fiscal numbers to know that Battleborn drastically underperformed in terms of sales and concurrent players. A quick glance at some Steam number and the fact that nobody seems to be talking about it tells you all you need to know.

As much as most gamers seem to have given up on Battleborn, 2K aren’t letting it go without a fight.

CEO of Take-Two (who own 2K), Strauss Zelnick, has admitted during a conference call that it underperformed, but he believes the game still has legs in it for the long run.

“While the game launched to solid reviews, its performance in the market has been below our expectations.”

“We think there remains an opportunity to grow the audience for this unique experience over time and 2K will continue to drive engagement and recurrent consumer spending on the title through add-on content and virtual currency.”

“So with regard to Battleborn, we’re being very frank about where we are, because we’re a transparent company.

“We’re still delivering new content to Battleborn. Audiences love Battleborn. We still have virtual currency coming for Battleborn. We’re not counting it out for a minute. We’re just telling you where we’re at now.”

Their plan to keep it fresh isn’t foolhardy. The developers are sinking a lot of time into bringing new content to Battleborn, including skins and maps as well as XP rewards. This is keeping the current playerbase invested in Gearbox’s latest release, but whether it can bring in a few new players remains to be seen.

The constant comparisons to Overwatching certainly can’t be helping the game either, despite them not being all that similar. However, judging by the news that Overwatch is now the fastest selling PC game ever, perhaps they should pick up some tips from the guys at Blizzard.
