Apparently Resident Evil 7 Isn’t Like Its Teaser At All

It seems as if the early suggestions that Resident Evil 7 is simply a remake of the doomed P.T. have been a little wide of the mark. Only its teaser is.

According to director Koushi Nakanishi in an interview with IGN, “puzzle solving, resource management, and combat” will be making a comeback:

“They’re all in there, but we’re focusing on horror has come home as a kind of theme for the teaser demo. So if you thought the games were going away from horror in previous years, this is just a statement of intent, purpose, to say it’s back.”

In another interview with Eurogamer, Nakanishi also claimed that the gun-toting, Michael-Bay-on-speed previous iteration, Resident Evil 6, won’t be at all similar to 7:

“If anyone out there has a bloodlust for holding a gun, check out Umbrella Corps. We are separating these aspects out into different titles where that gameplay can come to the fore, and makes the most sense for that title. [Resident Evil 7] is not going to be a gun fest.”

That’s wild. They have effectively lifted the marketing of Silent Hills, but will instead actually, you know, make the game that millions want and are ready to spend serious money on. Konami will probably be livid because I’m pretty sure they’re just The Patriots at this point.

Having played the teaser and enjoyed it, I must admit that I am slightly disappointed to hear it isn’t going to be the tone of Resident Evil 7. Even within the limitations of a really short teaser, it had me interested in a new world of horror and genuinely scared me at a few points. It could have been a high-budget Outlast, but considering how polarising it has been between fans, it’s probably best for the sake of the franchise to go back to some of the earlier mechanics in the series. However, first-person is staying, so that’s good, in my opinion – I even added it as something I wanted to see in my preview list.

I really, really, really don’t want to go back to tank controls, though. People are clamouring for it because of nostalgia, but it would simply be too archaic in this day and age of gaming.
