Among Ruins is a fantasy RTS RPG set within Domus Viva, a kingdom struggling to fend off an inevitable invasion. The gameplay is similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, and others in that same vein. It’s turn-based, but indie developer Vulpe Arcana decided early on not to include a grid system in the combat zones, allowing for more fluid tactics for players.
The developing team that makes up Vulpe Arcana is currently international, with people working on the game from all corners of the globe including America, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Denmark, Greece, Poland, and Switzerland. While one team sleeps, their global counterparts are wide awake and at work.
“This allows us to create a game that is unique and fresh, as every member of the team has their own stories and goals which we discuss endlessly,” said Flavio Pinho De Almeida Reis, Founder and Managing Director at Vulpe Arcana. This factor of development intrinsically affects the game’s story since Among Ruins focuses heavily on bloodlines and prestige, telling a story of multiple races struggling together. Flavio added, “Every main race in the story is based off of different cultures, and this has big impacts since not all cultures think alike. It’s paying homage to our diverse team; however, we have far less conflicts than the inhabitants of Domus Viva.”
Concept art for Among Ruins began around June of 2016, and their work really started to take shape around October of the same year.
One of the game’s artists said, “the art style has a lot of influence from oriental artists such as Akihiko Yoshida, Hideo Minaba and Tatsuya Yoshikawa. Those artists created wonderful worlds with a classic and organic feel to them. That is our goal for Among Ruins: to create a deep, organic, colorful, and meaningful world full of its own culture and nature, and to give players the feeling that they are really there, that they can enter this reality with their own eyes and enjoy the wonders that this world offers them and its characters.”
The team is aiming initially for the PC market with possibility of an expansion onto consoles, depending on the demand. Their Kickstarter should go live sometime in May 2017, and they should have a tech demo available around the middle of the campaign.
