Amnesia: The Bunker – How to Deal with Rats

Rats are secondary enemies in Amnesia: The Bunker that are often gnawing on bodies and blocking your path. While they aren’t quite as deadly as the stalker, they can really chip away at your health and cause bleeding, meaning that the smell of your blood will keep them hunting you down and also alert the stalker to where you are.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to deal with the rats in Amnesia: The Bunker.

The first and most obvious solution for a rat problem is to shoot them or throw a grenade (either explosive or gas) at them. However, using any of the somewhat rare ammo isn’t advised when you will need it to repel the beast, neither is throwing a grenade when it will no doubt immediately attract him. You will also probably need to equip the gas mask if you’re using a gas mask. Use this method if you have no other option available.

The second way of dealing with rats is to throw meat to distract from whatever they’re eating. Meat can be found on occasion throughout the bunker, but the best place to find it in abundance is the pantry in Maintenance on the east side of the bunker. Here’s a map.

Players can also craft a torch to deter rats, but it may take you quite a while to put it all together. First, you will need to find a stick and a cloth and then combine them in your inventory. You will then need to find the lighter, which is situated in Giroud’s locker in mission storage. Finding Giraud’s dog tag is random and depends on things like difficulty, but here’s a map of where you can find all of the bodies.

Once you have the lighter, simply light the torch and you can now start repelling the rats so you can either keep going along your path or collect the resources they were “guarding”.

Bear in mind that it seems like you cannot permanently get rid of rats from a specific place within the bunker, as they keep coming back. Players can also jump over rats in most instances, but bear in mind this will still result in you getting bitten at least once.

Amnesia: The Bunker is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S.
