Things go from bad to worse for the career of the man formerly known as Alberto Del Rio. The Mexican star has been stripped of the GFW World Championship (non-storyline) after revelations regarding his personal life unravelled at an unsavoury and rapid rate.
Patron had been indefinitely suspended by the company for domestic violence allegations emanating from a tape that surfaced on TMZ documenting Patron and his fiancée, WWE’s Paige, embroiled in a furious argument at an airport. The story made for gaudy tabloid headlines that for once escaped the confines of pro-wrestling’s usual outlets.
“GFW has concluded its internal consideration of the events surrounding the suspension of Alberto El Patron”, began a statement posted on the company’s website.
“While it is apparent that initial reports unfairly characterized El Patron’s involvement in the incident in the Orlando airport, we are nonetheless disappointed with the manor (sic) in which he dealt with this situation; we expect more decorum from all on the GFW roster, especially the World Champion.”
The statement concludes: “We have communicated with El Patron our decision to strip him of his championship title. No decision has been taken as to the date on which he will be reinstated to the roster, the conditions of which are a private matter between the company and El Patron.”
The future is unclear for El Patron as he faces being effectively blackballed from the two leading promotions in the USA and his reputation everywhere else in tatters.
