Akira Tozawa Wins the Cruiserweight Championship On Raw

Tozawa

Akira Tozawa was set to go one on one with Neville at Summerslam, in his rematch from Great Balls of Fire for the Cruserweight title. Although it seems WWE weren’t 100% confident with whether this programme would fit into the pretty stacked Summerslam card, so this past Monday night on Raw, the anticipated title match was bumped down to free television.

The phrase ‘the man makes the title’ couldn’t be more appropriate when describing the reign of Neville. His character development and overall demeanour inside the ring has taken the Cruiserweight division to new levels, the Neville level if you will. All good things must of course come to an end, and in this case, his run was to end on a go-home edition of Raw. Tozawa and the Titus Brand have secured themselves their first championship.

The reception to Tozawa’s title win has been a little frosty, with many considering him to be an unworthy successor to Neville, an opinion which I’m inclined to agree. But then again, considering the current status of most Cruiserweight stars, bar maybe Ariya Davari, nobody is standing out as a potential threat to Neville, especially since Neville has easily ran through the likes of Austin Aries and Jack Gallagher. Tozawa has been the only one to elicit a noticeable reaction from different crowds and has created some impactful moments on 205 Live. So I’m recommending to myself not to let the love for Neville and his title reign take away from Tozawa and his potential as a champion.

Of course there’s always the chance that a rematch between the two could still happen this weekend, whether it be on the main card or bumped down to their usual spot on the pre-show. However nothing has yet to be confirmed.

Perhaps we’ll be seeing Neville ascend back into the heavyweight division? I think it’s definitely something his new attitude has warranted since giving everyone a reason to care about 205 Live and the Cruiserweights. Or would the 205 roster have too big of a gap to fill?
