A New Villain Might Be Coming Onboard For Spider-Man 3

Does it feel...a bit too much?

According to Cinemablend, there has been sightings of Willem Dafoe on the set of the latest Spider-Man flick. If Dafoe is on set, you know what this means – the Green Goblin might make an appearance in the third film.

There were rumblings of this last year in December, when The Illuminderdi reported that Willem Dafoe and Thomas Hayden Church were finalising deals to resume their characters in this third film.

A Case of Too Many Villains?

This is all speculation of course, much like the return of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire for this third film (Tom Holland has since come out to deny the reappearance of Garfield and Maguire in Spider-Man 3). What we do have confirmation on is Electro and Doctor Octopus, which seems to be leading us down a possible Sinister Six path. This already seemed like one villain too many, and with Green Goblin and even possibly the Sandman making a appearance, will this taint the broth?

After all, the Spider-Man franchise hasn’t had much luck when facing down multiple villains. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 suffered from an overdose of villains, which caused the narrative to suffer, since there were so many more plotlines to follow. This was also the case for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with Garfield’s Peter Parker facing down Electro and Harry Osbourne as the Green Goblin.

The narrative might be heading down multi-verse territory, since with the exception of the Sandman, most of these villains are supposedly dead. Though I suppose we never see Electro and Doctor Octopus die die, so I guess anything is possible.
