Spoilers for The Last of Us ahead.
The Last of Us is a brilliant game, probably my all-time favourite. With two characters at its core with investing your all into and a take on the post-apocalypse that isn’t completely tired, it cemented itself as a triumphant goodbye for the PS3 before reappearing on PS4. But what if you could play as more than two characters, three if we’re counting Sarah?
YouTuber Freako has released a video that shows being able to play as Tess during her last stand, which is when the tone of the game takes an abrupt shift. We never directly see her die, but her sacrifice meant she went out as a hero rather than the (arguable) bastard that she was.
In the video, the player pretty seamlessly takes the role of Tess, different animations and all, and proceeds to take down two enemies just before dying like Tess does in the game itself. She can even technically pull a Reach and take down more, but the game will crap out if she survives entirely.
The Tess mod has been previously used to show an alternative take in which Joel and Tess swapped roles, but never (to the best of my knowledge) used within a previously cordoned off environment. It’s not without its flaws (she can survive, for one) but the mod video gives a little bit of extra context to the point where it may have been cool to play it in the main game from the beginning.
Freako also revealed how they managed it, which is well worth watching because of the weird box thing alone.
