E3 2018: Fallout 76 Is An Online Multiplayer Game, Releasing On November 14th

Fallout 76

After being teased twice and then given an extended look at Xbox’s E3 briefing, Bethesda have showcased Fallout 76 even more during their own conference.

Fallout 76 will have you playing as a Vault Dweller in Vault 76 on the day the vault opens. But something’s amiss: you’re the only still there.

You leave the vault into the wasteland of West Virginia, which will boast 16x the details of regular Bethesda games. You are sent on a quest by the Overseer to six different locations and will be inspired by folklore of West Virginia, including some very creepy crawlies.

As widely reported, Fallout 76 will be an online multiplayer game. Todd Howard confirmed as such during his conference, but you won’t suffer permadeath like in many similar games like Rust. You will be able to drop in and out to play with your friends and your progress will be carried.

The world will be wide open with very few rules, Howard also added.

Bethesda also released a string of Vault-Tec videos to introduce the gameplay, which does look very similar to Fallout 4 and features PVP. However, you can make alliances or just go it totally online in the Wasteland. And it has emotes. And a giant, violent sloth.

Bethesda also detailed how construction will work, including encounters with monsters that want to undo all your hard work. It will also come with a photo mode, which is the hot new thing and something every game should have.

Fallout 76 will also have nuclear sites that will apparently allow players to use them at will, which seems like just the worst idea. You will have to find secret nuclear launch codes by teaming with others, which will then allow you to launch the nuke. This seems wide open for griefing.

Howard continued to big up 76, stating that it will have dedicated servers and support for years to come. He acknowledged that there was a big risk with 76, and that Bethesda would run a beta.

It looks interesting, for sure, though it may not do enough to appease those who thought it was a “mainline” single-player entry. That it’s a spin-off may concern some fans, but it can’t be worse than Metal Gear Survive.

Right?

Fallout 76 will release on November 14th, 2018 for PS4, Xbox One, PC.
