Tencent’s Obligatory PUBG Mobile Rip-Off Is Coming

Glorious Mission

It was only a matter of time. If you own any kind of relatively popular property, you should have a stopwatch out to see how long it takes for a Chinese company to rip it off. This time out, it’s Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds turn to get nice and plagiarised.

Developed by Tencent, who also happen to own part of PUBG developer Bluehole and have a large stake in Fortnite’s Epic games (what a mad coincidence) have revealed a mobile game that shares a lot of DNA with Brandon Green’s behemoth. Don’t just take my word for it, look at the video below for how many damn cues the tentatively titled Glorious Mission takes:

In Tencent’s defense, they have actually bided their time before unleashing their own battle royale game – those that fit the BR mould are already dominating mobile sales charts, but Tencent’s version looks like being one of the “best” adaptations to date. As in, it looks like someone just shrunk down PUBG and whacked it on an iPhone.

If you aren’t familiar with Tencent, you really should because they will soon be our corporate overlords. As well as owning parts of the aforementioned companies, they out and out own Riot Games, who are behind League of Legends. If you think about how huge LoL is, they are much bigger deals than most of the western gaming world realises.

While it’s worth mentioning that PUBG wasn’t the first battle royale game to find an audience, it looks like a lot of other developers are being heavily “inspired” by it now. As the next big thing in gaming, battle royale games could be huge, but we certainly don’t need the same thing that happened to VR: too many bad, awful apples spoiling the bunch.
