Devil May Cry Turns 15 Years Old Today

Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry was first released on PlayStation 2 systems on this day in 2001, making it a whopping fifteen years old. Time flies when you’re juggling combos and trying to repress your evil side.

Originally conceived as a Resident Evil game, Capcom saw enough in the initial concept to make it a game of its own. Featuring half-demon anti-hero Dante, Devil May Cry brought the attitude to Sony’s new console and won itself some rave reviews – it’s still the best reviewed game in the series to this day.

Blending fluid combat and a crazy but captivating storyline, the original Devil May Cry built itself a huge legion of fans who were eager to see where the series went next. Devil May Cry 2 was released two years later to lukewarm reviews and disappointing sales. The third game, Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, was much more of a success, telling the story of a younger Dante with the high-octane, punishing gameplay that won the series so many adorers in the first place.

With the next generation of consoles, the series took it up another level with Devil May Cry 4, which became the best-selling entry in the series to date, thanks to it being on PS3, Xbox 360, and also PC. Five years went by before fans caught another glimpse of Dante, but he wasn’t the same Dante when DmC: Devil May Cry was released. A brown-haired, more antagonistic Dante was seen in 2013 and was a polarising change among fans.

Happy birthday, Dante. It’s been three years since the last game, so I think it’s about time you dusted off Rebellion and came back to us.
